Earth Mother (Pachamama) Series
This series is based on a clay mother earth figure I got when traveling in Peru. I have had an ongoing interest in fertility concepts and the different values placed on fertility in different societies. This figure represents the earth, not a person. A trigger to start a series of paintings. My homage to Mother Earth. Mother Earth, primal, moist, and fertile. She produces such wondrous patterns, colours, representing rebirth and new beginnings.
Highlighting a universal truth that we are all just custodians of the land and the weight is upon us to take care of her.
Honour your mother she gives life.
I start a painting with drawing and laying down blocks of colour. Adding (and subtracting) different patterns as each layer develops. Some paintings may have up to 15 layers. I painted with acrylic on board and finished them by coating them with a protective layer of wax.
The World movement, called ‘The Pachamama Alliance’, has goals for a thriving and sustainable world for all and legal rights for Nature (her right to be respected). The right not to be contaminated by using fertilizers not pesticides. Agriculture activities should be done at the right time. To change the dream of the North (Western world) which is based on consumption.
