Subliminal (Current Series)

My current series of abstract and expressionistic paintings is titled Subliminal. I start with a play stage, trying not to have any idea of how the painting will end up. This is a very instinctive and natural process. The objective is to keep it free.

My initial marks and colour choices are spontaneous. As the layers of oil build, I become more considered and refined.

I will start to see that my marks or colour choices have been influenced by my surroundings. Shadows on the ground, shapes of seeds, colour combinations of flowers. Recognising the subliminal influences. Pale green/yellows on the side of the river bank against the many shades of blue. The bougainvillea hot pink flowers at my door. The red hot poker flowers on the side of the road. The meandering Waimea stream flowing across the sand to the sea. It is my emotional response to what I see. When I am out and about I am always looking at my surroundings, being present so I can notice.

My paintings are full of texture and colour with brush marks full of energy. Lush paint is intersected with strong singular marks and if you look closely you can see more in the loud and quiet conversation of the work.
